Approximately 50 individuals gathered at the University of Michigan’s Diag on Thursday evening for a rally titled “What’s Next?”, organized by the College Democrats. The rally was held in response to two developments: the University of Michigan’s decision to end all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, and the reported revocation of visas for 12 international students, allegedly under federal pressure. The event featured speeches from prominent Democratic figures including U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell, former State Representative Felicia Brabec, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, and State Representative Jason Morgan. Student organizers and speakers framed the University’s decision and the visa cancellations as politically motivated actions influenced by the Trump administration’s policies, expressing concern about civil liberties and academic freedom.

College Democrats Communications Director Amber Henson accused the University of yielding to federal pressure and warned of a slippery slope starting with DEI elimination and expanding to broader infringements on student rights. Attendees and speakers emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of international students, with multiple references to First Amendment protections, immigrant experiences, and the value of diversity in educational environments. Rep. Dingell stressed the importance of maintaining international diversity on campus and called for open dialogue and mutual understanding in educational spaces. While the rally was student-led, the high-profile participation of elected officials suggests a coordinated political message aimed at both university administration and national policymakers.
